Mi-no-Hi Festival
Court

-*-*-*-

Japanese courts are very different from European courts. This is some of what you can expect:

  • When you walk into court, you will see two stools flanked by standing candlesticks in front of paper screens. This is where the Royalty will be during court.

  • To the left of the thrones, there will be a row of Royal Advisors sitting on cushions. Directly in front of the Royalty, The Ministers of the Left and the Right will be stationed.

  • The Ministers conduct all business between the Courtiers/Populace and the Royalty.

  • The first 2 or 3 rows of the Populace seating will be cushions. In period, all of the Populace would be kneeling on these cushions, called zabuton, but we realize that this is not feasible in the Current Middle Ages. Please plan your seating accordingly for your comfort.

  • In contrast to European courts, the Courtiers and Populace are seated before the Royalty enter, and the Royalty enters from the front of the room.

Please keep in mind the following:

  • The Royalty enter court unannounced, after Courtiers and Populace are seated and silent. This is a sign of great respect.

  • If the Royalty enter, leave, stand, or bow, please bow and remain so until they are seated or leave the room.

  • Court is conducted in silence.

  • Casual talking, whispering, and murmuring is considered directly disrepectful to the King and Queen.

  • That being said, spontaneous outbursts of heart-felt emotion are acceptable. As a sign of respect, your head should never be above that of the King & Queen's at any time.

  • If called, please bow when approaching the Throne, stop at The Ministers (heralds who will be 3 feet from the Throne), and kneel if possible. The Ministers will conduct all business between you and the Throne, and dismiss you when the business is concluded.

  • If you sneeze, please do it twice. Doing it once is considered to be insincere.

The exotic and strange nature of this Court promises to be thoroughly enjoyable for all who wish to conduct themselves in the spirit of the Event.

Kashiko,
Saiaiko
Squire of Sir Ogami Akira
Yama Kaminari Ryu
